Abstract

Pinus montezumae D.Don is a host species of the bark beetle Dendroctonus valens LeConte (Coleoptera: Scolytinae), whose colonization is associated with symbiotic fungi (Ophiostomatales) that help interfere with the tree's defense mechanisms. The objective of this study was to identify and characterize, morphologically and molecularly, the ophiostomatoid fungus associated with D. valens in a P. montezumae stand in the Monte Comunal Isidro Fabela area, Jocotitlan, State of Mexico, Mexico. Following the collection of D. valens specimens in 2024, Ophiostoma gilletteae Marinc., Z.W. de Beer & M.J. Wingf. (Ascomycota, Ophiostomatales) was isolated and identified. This represents the first record of this fungus associated with P. montezumae in Mexico, and expands the knowledge of the fungal diversity associated with this bark beetle.
