Abstract

Melipona beecheii is a stingless bee species that produces geopropolis with phenolic compounds associated with diverse biological properties. In this study, geopropolis collected from the Yucatán Peninsula were analyzed to determine their chemical composition and to evaluate their antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were determined using spectrophotometric assays, and individual compounds were identified and quantified by HPLC. Antioxidant activity was assessed using the DPPH and FRAP assays, while in vitro antibacterial activity was evaluated through the agar diffusion method. The extracts from Chetumal and FCP showed a majority content of apigenin and pinocembrin (5.11 and 4.12 mg/g extract respectively), whereas the extract from Sn. Ant. Yaxché exhibited antioxidant activity according to both methods. Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were more susceptible to the Sta. Cruz Pblo. and Chetumal extracts. These findings indicate that the chemical composition and bioactivity of M. beecheii geopropolis varies according to location.
