Abstract

Phosphate-solubilizing fungi represent a sustainable alternative for improving the availability of this nutrient in agricultural systems. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of phosphate-solubilizing fungi and different carbon sources on phosphorus availability, phosphatase activity, and the growth of tomato plants under greenhouse conditions. A significant interaction was observed between fungal strains and carbon sources regarding soluble phosphorus concentration, acid phosphatase activity, and plant growth. The highest phosphorus solubilization was obtained with Aspergillus niger and arabinose, whereas the highest phosphatase activity was recorded with the A. niger-Penicillium brevicompactum consortium and glucose. Inoculated plants showed increases of up to 48 % in height and 125 % in dry weight. These results demonstrate the potential of specific fungus-carbon source combinations to sustainably improve phosphorus nutrition.
