Abstract

Of the ten Frankliniella species recorded on mango in Chiapas, Mexico, F. invasor Sakimura is the most abundant and damaging, as it causes flower drop and yield reduction. This study evaluated under laboratory conditions the toxicity of synthetic (malathion, cypermethrin) and biorational (neem, capsaicin, Spinosad) insecticides on F. invasor and two non-target species: Scaptotrigona mexicana Guérin-Méneville and Orius insidiosus Say. Synthetic insecticides showed 100 % efficacy against F. invasor but high toxicity to beneficial species. The biorational insecticides (neem and capsaicin) showed acceptable efficacy (80-90 % mortality) and lower impact on non-target species (55 % and 43 % mortality in S. mexicana and O. insidiosus, respectively). Spinosad was effective against the pest, but also caused high mortality in beneficial insects. It is concluded that neem and capsaicin are more selective alternatives for integrated pest management.
