Abstract

Suaeda edulis is a halophytic plant that has the ability to develop in hostile environments, being able to present polymorphism, which is the ability to produce seeds with different characteristics. The objective of this study was to determine the presence of polymorphism and dormancy in Suaeda edulis seeds and their response under stress conditions (NaCl). The collection sites were 1) Cráter Rincón de Parangueo, Guanajuato; 2) Colegio de Postgraduados, Montecillo, Texcoco, Estado de México; 3) Mixquic, Ciudad de México; 4) Cráter La Alberca, Valle de Santiago, Guanajuato; 5) Lago Cuitzeo, Cuitzeo del Porvenir, Michoacán. The seeds from each site (10 seeds per site) were observed with a scanning electron microscope. To determine the germination capacity, a completely randomized design was used, where study factors were the collection sites (factor 1) with five levels and the seed treatments (factor 2) with two levels (hydrated and non-hydrated). for a total of 10 treatments with four replications. The statistical analyzes consisted of performing binary logistic regression, estimating the probability of germination and the calibration curves of the probability of germination. The results showed that the seeds of Suaeda edulis shows polymorphism of three types, seeds without seed testa, seeds with brown testa and seeds with black testa. The probability of germination differs with respect to the collection sites and hydration and non-hydration treatments. The seeds have dormancy that can be reconditioned by subjecting the seeds to periods of soaking in distilled water, getting to recover their ability to germinate.
